Vietnam - motorbiking in the crazy shit of Vietnam

1 augustus 2018

Vietnam is one my loves in Asia. I love the unorganized shit, the crazy traffic, the fact that rules are recommendations, the landscapes, the curiosity of the local people. I decided to buy a manual motor, without knowing how to drive. My friends Frankie and Sean pick me up from the airport and there the adventure begins! Some testdrives further I am the proud owner of my buddie Zara! ZARA is the name of the dog home. She is big, naughty, does what she wants... And that's exactly what my motor does. I learn it the next day to drive in 15 minutes lesson from Sean and Frankie.

Zara the motor had always problems like a not working gears, breaks, chain, electronics... It's a date everyday at the mechanic and guess what! I love it! The community with the locals and getting invited by the families at the mechanic opens new doors. The guys and me see a lot of the nature, we cross mountains, dirt roads and crazy busy traffic without rules. Busses try to hit us as motorbikers. So most of the time we try to pull over or go all the way to the right of the road.

The little villages on the way opens a new Vietnam. Families living in little bunkers, kids playing at the side of the road and kids driving on real motorbikes. It's all possible. One thing got my attention and that are the kids. These kids run to the street, scream and wave to you. So happy! I got butterfly feelings everyday again what a freedom and happiness on the road. The weather is most of the time nice, sunny and dry. Sometimes a heavy rainday but also this is part of the adventure.

The kids in the villages are ready to give a highfive. I approach slowly the kids to give these kids a big highfive.(and that burns if you drive 40km an hour)

Sometimes I drive alone, all alone as a girl in Vietnam. The result more feeling of freedom, excitement about the hope that the motorbike has no problems, the excitement of the windy roads in the mountains, the small talks with locals who drive next to me just to talk to me!

I feel myself a traveler, a hippie alone on this planet. I wish I could take this piece of shit, yes, I am talking about my bike Zara to home. Because it feels like my baby!

The cities on the way are even more beautiful than the first time Vietnam. Again is it very social. It is like you read a book a second time and discover all the hidden places. That's amazing!

On the way I meet motor drivers backpackers which is a perfect combination to share your experiences. But also all the travelers who travel by bus are cool. I made in every place again a lot of new friends. But Frankie and Sean have a special place in my heart. They are like brothers for me.

In Hoi An after 5 weeks I sell my bike for the same price I bought it for. This guy never drove is so we spend the whole afternoon to learn manual driving on the motor. Step 1: get in 1st gear and let the clutch go. I scream on the street 'let go let go and gas! Now 2nd gear!' and when he does it I am so proud. He drives my bike after an afternoon practice and buys it.

It is an emotional moment for me. Literally and symbolic I say goodbye to an adventure which was maybe the most excited for me as person. The adventure where I felt the pure freedom and happiness. I felt cool on my colorful bike with a way too loud exhaust.

In Hoi An staff and shop owners still remember me. Even people in the bar remember me from my first time in Hoi An. (strange ofcourse!) I stayed 2 weeks the last time and this time again 9 days.

I walk on the street, knowing the people from the hostel and see many people again who I met on the way. I feel home and make so many new friends again. On the way out of Hoi An it feels sad, this is my second home. I started also learning Spanish here! Step by step I get more knowledge and I love it to learn again🤗

My last days in Vietnam I spend in Quy Nhon a beach place together with a buddy from Hungary. We enjoy both our last days in Vietnam in the perfect holiday way!

Time for Myanmar ❤️ almost Nepal and finally to my favorite South American friend Felipe in Brazil. Life is good, keep smiling!
